The 85-kilometer-long premium trail Soonwaldsteig from Kirn on the Nahe through the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park to Bingen on the Rhine promises a special hiking experience combined with unique natural experiences. Extensive beech forests create a healthy climate for humans and animals. The biodiversity along the trail is great, and the evidence of fascinating geological processes is impressive. Old, hidden ruins in the forest, such as the Alteburg, and castles and palaces perched on mountain peaks, like Burg Rheinstein, tell stories of Celts, Romans, and the Middle Ages.
The trail runs over the distinctive quartzite ridges of Großer Soon and Lützelsoon and opens up one of the quietest and most pristine landscapes in the Hunsrück. For long stretches, the Soonwaldsteig leads through remote forests, far from towns and traffic.
