The Schmidtburg near Bundenbach is one of the most significant castle complexes in the region. It is said to have been built in 926 for protection against the Hungarians and was a ancestral castle of the Wildgrafen. Between the towns of Buch and Masterhausen lies Balduinseck Castle from the 14th century. It was also built by Elector Balduin of Luxembourg. The high castle is now a special highlight for many hikers on the Saar-Hunsrück Trail.
5. Kyrburg: Ruin with panoramic view over Kirn
High above the town of Kirn, the Kyrburg has been towering since the 12th century and is now considered a landmark of the city. Today, the building houses a Protestant family and youth center, as well as the restaurant Freigeist with a great view of the Rotefels.
8. Burg Dill: One of the oldest castles in the Hunsrück
One of the oldest castle complexes in the Hunsrück. It consists of an upper and lower castle and was partially built in the 12th century.
9. Castle Kastellaun: Ruins in the center of the city
In the old center of Kastellaun, the ruins of the Sponheim Castle rise on a steep rock. There is plenty to offer for both young and old. The castle was already mentioned in documents in the 13th century. At the end of the 20th century, it was renovated extensively.
