Vital Tour Wildgrafenweg

After overcoming a short steep ascent at the beginning, we get our first view of the Stiftskirche St. Johannisberg and the rock debris-covered slopes of Hellberg. The path then leads us over Schifferberg to the Ruine Brunkenstein. The ruin is a witness to the military conflicts of long-gone times. From here, we have a picturesque view of Schloss Dhaun, the next stop on our hike. The famous "Dhauner Feud" of 1340, fought between the lord of the castle Johann I and Archbishop Balduin of Trier, is recorded in the history books. In connection with the "Dhauner Feud", a veritable ring of castles was created, including the outer castle Brunkenstein, the castles Rotenberg and Martinstein, the siege position Geiersley, and the castle on Johannisberg.

Although long-past wars have left much destruction, impressive relics and monuments from these times can still be admired today. Schloss Dhaun is worth a visit before we continue our hike through the tranquil village of Dhaun. At the height of the Dhauner church, the former count's brewery, our second steep ascent begins. From above, we are treated to a breathtaking view of the dominant ridges of the Hunsrück, the gentle hilly landscape of the Northern Palatinate highlands, and the charming Nahe Valley.

The hiking trail takes us through extensive forest areas, past the wildgräfliche foundation 'Karlshof'. At the height of Itzbacherhof, we cross a field framed by hedges before reaching the Hochstettener forest. Finally, the Wildgrafenweg leads into the Itzbachtal with its high-quality biotope-protected wetlands. Along the edge of the forest, with a view of old fruit tree stocks, our path approaches the village of St. Johannisberg. The local Stiftskirche from the 13th century, with its art-historically valuable tomb monuments, is the former burial church of the Dhauner Wildgrafen and can be visited. Right next door awaits us the Nahe Skywalk. It is a 65 square meter viewing platform that juts out 7 meters over the cliff of a former quarry. From it, one has a unique view over the Nahe Valley and the old quarry below. From there, we begin our last short stage of the hike back to the starting point.

Our tips for carefree hiking enjoyment

Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and shoes, it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles, and breathable backpacks are comfortable while hiking. However, good shoes are essential. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on flat paths. For longer routes, we recommend stable hiking shoes with a grippy, non-slip sole. Also, think about sun protection and bring a drink. One liter of water is ideal.
