IAN FOUNTAIN is one of those artistic personalities where pianistic mastery and musical thinking form a rare unity. His playing is characterized by structural clarity, tonal responsibility, and a deep rooting in the musical text – qualities that have made him a valued interpreter, educator, and conversational partner for decades. He was the youngest winner of the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Masters Competition in Tel Aviv in 1989 at the age of 19. He was trained as a choirboy in Oxford and studied piano with Sulamita Aronovsky at the Royal Northern College of Music.
As a recitalist, he has performed in major centers such as New York, Chicago, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Jerusalem. He is a regular guest at international festivals in Europe, Japan, and Korea (e.g., Prague Spring, Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein, Enescu (Bucharest), and Kuhmo).
As a sought-after chamber musician, he has long-standing collaborations with musicians such as David Geringas, Ulf Hoelscher, the Mandelring Quartet, and the Emperor Quartet.
