There are musical formations that composers approach with special respect. The string trio – violin (Johanna Müller), viola (Hartmut Rohde) and cello (Konstantin Heidrich) – belongs to these forms. Three voices, without a sonic cushion, entirely dependent on each other: What emerges here is music of great clarity and intimacy.
This radical transparency has made the string trio a special challenge for centuries – and a source of extraordinary beauty. Beethoven, Weinberg, Richard Strauss, and Schubert: four composers, four sound worlds, connected by the same intimate instrumentation. Beethoven's c-minor trio opens with urgent drama. Mieczysław Weinberg wrote his trio in 1950 under the impression of persecution, flight, and personal loss. Richard Strauss surprises with his variations on a Bavarian folk song: a work full of wit, elegance, and surprising twists. The conclusion is Schubert's B-flat major trio - music of great singability and that expansiveness which Robert Schumann described as "heavenly lengths".
