Mr. Devil Faust

Heinrich Faust perceives the here and now as worthless. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, a craving for pleasure, and an insatiable desire, he wants to transcend the boundaries of science, the world, and his own self. To do this, he makes a bet with the devil and plunges into a restless witch ride through human abysses. Faster, further, bigger, more – yet in the end, Gretchen and her child are dead, while the longed-for world formula remains undiscovered. “Mr. Devil Faust,” brilliantly embodied in the one-man play by Dominique Horwitz, brings Goethe's character into the present and contrasts it with a world shaped by acceleration, self-optimization, and the desire for more mindfulness. Climate protection, progress, technology, and the crisis of the church also come into focus. Would Faust be happier today – or does he show how little society has evolved despite all the changes? Even in the “big world,” Faust does not find peace. He strives for power and possession, wants to gain land, conquer the sea, and shape humanity according to his ideas. The play negotiates questions of nature and destruction, industrialization, colonization, and the limits of human megalomania.

Dominique Horwitz received the special award from the INTHEGA board in 2023 for outstanding and long-standing achievements in German-language guest theater.
