On November 1, 1112, the 14-year-old Hildegard was admitted to the Disibodenberg monastery along with Countess Jutta of Sponheim and another young woman. Jutta of Sponheim chose to be enclosed in a cell here at her own request. Whether the two companions shared this fate can only be speculated.
A tour at Disibodenberg on 01.11.2026 will also take a look at the women who played important and powerful roles alongside Hildegard at Disibodenberg.
Today, Hildegard is regarded in Germany, especially due to her multifaceted work and her influence, as the most famous woman of the Middle Ages. However, Jutta was no less influential, as her vita shows. Later, Richardis of Stade joined the women's convent. Her parents, as margraves of the Northern March, had an even larger sphere of influence than Jutta's brother in the Naheland. During Hildegard's time, the Disibodenberg monastery gained regional prominence due to the activities of these women.
