The Disibodenberg is shaped by a tumultuous history. After an unclear Celtic and Roman settlement, the origins of the monastery date back to the 7th century: Around 650, the Irish-Scottish wandering monk Disibod settled with his entourage on the Disibodenberg and began to evangelize the inhabitants of the Nahe region from here. Augustinian canons built a small convent here around 1000. By 1100, Benedictines arrived and began constructing a large monastery complex. During this time, Saint Hildegard of Bingen also spent 40 years of her life on the mountain. Later, Cistercians settled here for 300 years.
Although the site served as a quarry after the dissolution of the monastery, there is still much to discover. Within a romantic park landscape from 1840, visitors are greeted by a ruin in a mystical atmosphere.
