Romance in Green – Romance in Pictures: The picturesque cultural landscape of the Rhine/Main, the aesthetics of Romanticism, and the landscape park on Disibodenberg
Without any 'romantic' prior knowledge, the attentive walker enjoys the unique atmosphere of the former monastery with its ruins, its mighty old trees, and views during their visit to Disibodenberg.
Designed in 1840 after an English model by the famous landscape architect Johannes Metzger from Heidelberg, the ruins landscape has since formed a romantic ensemble with the deliberately designed nature.
The art historian Prof. Dr. Astrid Gräfin von Luxburg is a lecturer on the history of garden art at the Department of Landscape Architecture at Geisenheim University and, as an independent cultural mediator, is an expert on the history of the cultural landscape of the Rhine-Main-Nahe region – in both painted and real forms. She has intensively studied the perception of nature in Romanticism in Germany and England.
The richly illustrated lecture provides fascinating insights into the relationship of the landscape park on Disibodenberg to Romanticism, the aesthetic foundations and interrelationships, as well as the real manifestations of the romantic idea: reunions with well-known forerunners and representatives of Romanticism such as Jean Jacques Rousseau, painters like Christian Georg Schütz the Elder and Hermann Saftleven. Goethe, Brentano, and Arnim are just as present as insights into lesser-known charming artistic views that, even in more recent times, demonstrate the artistic commitment to the tradition of Romanticism.
