The Stumm organ-building family from Rhaunen-Sulzbach is one of the most significant organ-building dynasties in music history. For nearly 190 years, they supplied a wide area from Bonn to Karlsruhe and from Luxembourg to Wertheim with their instruments.
Stumm organs were considered precious and of the highest craftsmanship quality. In 1845, a Frankfurt newspaper reported that Catherine II had considered bringing the workshop to the Tsar's court in St. Petersburg.
Of the approximately 360 organ works by this family, many have survived to this day, some even in exceptionally original condition. These instruments are part of the cultural heritage of the Nahe and Hunsrück regions.
For a long time, many of these treasures led a quiet Sleeping Beauty existence. However, in recent decades, they have been rediscovered by connoisseurs and music lovers. A visit to these extraordinary instruments is also worthwhile for locals.
As sounding testimonies of craftsmanship, they tell of cultural life, history, and musical joy – and enable – like a wine of lasting memory – encounters of a very special kind.
LEONARD SCHICK is internationally active as a concert organist; a central part of his work is improvisation in historical styles. Growing up in Lausanne, he studied harpsichord and organ at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Jesper Christensen, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, and Tobias Lindner, as well as organ with Sietze de Vries in Groningen.
He has performed solo in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, and Portugal. He regularly concerts on significant historical organs, especially on instruments by Arp Schnitger and his school.
