"The Monastery Complex Disibodenberg as the Realization of Christian Life"
The Disibodenberg Monastery was built between 1108 and 1146 as a Benedictine monastery; the current ruins still allow for an understanding of the original floor plan. The takeover by the reformist monk order of the Cistercians in the mid-13th century did lead to some architectural modernizations, but the underlying monastery plan was not changed, allowing for conclusions to be drawn about that time - including the stay of Hildegard (of Bingen).
The tour of the monastery complex on October 11 focuses on the layout of the mountain monastery, which was fundamentally planned according to the then-significant monastery plan of St. Gall. It is also evident that the Benedictine Rule, which was crucial for the order, was implemented architecturally. Being able to discover these connections even after almost 900 years is always surprising.
The tour concludes with a walk through the museum.
Dr. Gabriele Mergenthaler wrote her doctoral thesis on the architectural history of the monastery ruins on Disibodenberg and knows every wall on Disibodenberg thanks to her architectural documentation.
