The enjoyment of game specialties has a long tradition due to the large forest areas in Saarland and Hunsrück. Common in the Saar-Hunsrück region are especially roe deer, stag, and wild boar. Fresh game meat from local hunters is of the highest quality, as the game grows in the region's forests under natural conditions.
Game meat is very popular among gourmets due to its delicate and aromatic flavor. As a healthy alternative to meat from factory farming, it is also rich in vitamins and nutrients, as well as being cholesterol-free, low in fat, and high in important Omega 3 fatty acids.
The participating restaurants usually have long experience with game cuisine. It is part of the philosophy of the Wild Week not only to offer premium cuts like deer back. The whole animal is processed into high-quality dishes. Crispy roasted legs or hearty roasts find their fans just as much as tender ragout, liver, or kidney. Both hearty dishes based on traditional recipes and grilled and braised dishes in a modern style are served.
