The feeling of being left out, not being considered, and looking at others who seem to be better off than we are is something we all know – or so I assume. The following passage from the Gospel of Mark shows us that jealousy and thoughts of competition existed even back then, among the disciples as well. Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, 'Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.' He said to them, 'What do you want me to do for you?' They said to him, 'Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.' Jesus said to them, 'You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?' And they said to him, 'We are able.' Jesus said to them, 'The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.' And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. Mk 10:35-41 Impulse Two brothers who are in agreement. Both eagerly follow Jesus. They are ready to give everything. Did they think that one day they might drink the cup, meaning they could die for their faith? In any case, they also want their future in glory to be secured and to receive the places to the right and left of Jesus. Thus, they wanted to be rewarded by him for their faithfulness. Questions How do I feel when I think of my siblings, friends, and colleagues? In which areas do I want to be better off than others? Where do I expect a special reward for my efforts?
