With the destruction of the city of Simmern in May and September of the year 1689, the Römerberg bastion also fell. The corner tower of the former city fortifications, featuring a round tower dome and window-like openings on the underside of the tower, is depicted in the engraving by Merian. The old bastion was accessed through a hole in the ceiling, suggesting a previous use as a prison. The upper part of the tower served as a guardroom.
The bastion was renovated in 2005/2006 and offers a beautiful view over the Wingertsbergpark.
