The approximately 3.8 km long hiking trail starts at the National Park Gate Erbeskopf and is signposted in both directions. It is recommended to walk the trail clockwise.
First, the path leads over wide forest paths with a gentle ascent before it transitions to narrow, winding trails. At the interactive station of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, you can playfully learn how important balance is in the ecosystem.
Subsequently, the trail runs along the natural forest reserve, a protected area where the natural processes of a forest can occur without human intervention. So, a small national park.
Further along, the path runs alongside a deadwood area. Here, you can see in many places that deadwood plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, as it provides habitat for numerous plant and animal species.
The hiking trail then leads through the management and care zone of the national park before crossing boardwalks through the Ehlesbruch Moor.
Just before tackling the last part of the trail to return to the starting point of the hike, the walkable 'nest', the station of the Idarwald Forestry Office, offers the opportunity to rest a bit and enjoy the view of the forest.
