Castle Dhronecken

It is certain that the castle was built in the 13th century by the Wildgrafen as vassals of the Luxembourg counts and was one of the most significant Luxembourg-Trier castles. The ancestral seat of the counts was well secured: not only by two powerful walls but also by a 20-meter-deep moat between the two streams, which made access to the castle on the flat eastern side difficult. Having been destroyed multiple times by Cologne, imperial, and French troops, and finally by an earthquake, only remnants remain.
The outer of the two ring walls is preserved. The preserved gate on the north side led to the outer bailey with the administrative building and chapel. Separated from this, an additional wall behind the current road 'Weyer Damm' secured the upper castle with a round keep and a great hall that once had 13 chambers. In modern times, a larger, towering building was constructed on the foundations of the old castle, which is now used as a forestry office.
A part of the castle's history lives on in the houses of the village, where significant parts of the castle were incorporated.
Tip: The corner tower can still be climbed. Also, visit the sound sculpture 'Windklang 816 M' on the Erbeskopf just a few kilometers away by car.
