Castle Kastellaun

In the heart of the old center of Kastellaun stands an ancient structure: Castle Kastellaun!

In the heart of the old center of Kastellaun stands an ancient structure: the Kastellaun Castle! The castle and the town of Kastellaun were first mentioned in documents as early as the early 13th century.

The castle belonged to the Counts of Sponheim, who had their ancestral seat near Bad Kreuznach. The Sponheim family only resided in Kastellaun under Simon II in the 14th century.
Two centuries later, Margrave Eduard Fortunatus of Baden chose the Kastellaun Castle as a temporary residence.
In the Palatine War of Succession, the castle was destroyed in 1689. In the 18th century, Kastellaun, along with the castle ruins, fell under French rule, which lasted until 1815.
Subsequently, Kastellaun became part of the Prussian Rhine Province. In 1884, the town acquired the castle ruins and conducted the first restoration.

At the end of the 20th century, significant renovations were carried out once again.
Today, the Kastellaun Castle proudly stretches its sturdy walls towards the sky.

The Sponheim Castle in ARGO – Experience the Past Anew

The Kastellaun Castle is a particularly vivid example of a medieval castle. The remains of the upper castle are largely preserved, and digitally visible are the three dominant structures of the upper castle: the palace in the west (16th century), the Gothic hall building from the 13th/14th century with a rib-vaulted cellar in the southeast, and the round keep as the highest tower of the castle. The lower castle was rebuilt on old foundations.

The Knightly Classroom
Nock the arrow, draw the string, aim somehow, and release..? But something is still missing...
Practicing archers agree that a successful hit is 90% theoretical knowledge and only 10% actual shooting practice. But don’t worry, archery courses in the Knightly Classroom at Kastellaun Castle are by no means dry material. Whether young or old, alone, with a partner, or the whole family with children from 5 years old: archery is concentration and meditation combined with sport, fun, and success experiences. In the primeval setting of the former Gothic castle cellar, archery can be practiced in complete silence, even meditatively, amidst the bustling town of Kastellaun. In the individually tailored course offerings, you can choose whether the sporty-experience-oriented or the meditative-reflective factor should be in the foreground.
