The Klopp Castle is, alongside the Mouse Tower, the landmark of the city. The picturesque castle ruin, destroyed during the Palatine War of Succession, was a popular destination during the time of Rhine Romanticism. The panoramic view of the Binger Loch fascinated numerous writers and artists (including Victor Hugo, Richard Wagner). Since 1854, the castle has been historically reconstructed by private owners.
Today, the city administration of Bingen is located in the castle, while the courtyard is accessible year-round and the tower is open to the public from April to October. A small exhibition dedicated to the illustrious guests is located in the tower. From the observation platform, there is a magnificent view over the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rheingau, the Rheinhessen hills, and the Nahe region. Occasionally, exhibitions take place here, and there are regular guided tours about the history of the castle. The “Restaurant Burg Klopp” has brought fine dining to the castle.
