Burgruine Baldenau ARGO
The Burgruine Baldenau is the only water castle in the Hunsrück. It is located directly at the...
The Baldenau Castle was built between 1312 and 1324 by Baldwin of Luxembourg, Elector and Archbishop of Trier. The castle also includes the "Stump Tower" on the Hunsrück Heights Road above the village of Hinzerath. From this ridge, approaching dangers could be detected early, allowing the castle inhabitants to be warned in time. The first destruction of Baldenau Castle occurred during the Thirty Years' War. After its later restoration, it was destroyed a second time in 1689 during the so-called Palatine War of Succession.
In 1982, the castle remains were secured and partially restored, and the 12-meter-wide moat was uncovered, allowing visitors to rediscover the typical features of the castle. Notable are the 25-meter-high keep and the massive castle walls. In the courtyard, one can find, among other things, the former pavement, the cellar, and the 8-meter-deep well.
The ruins of Baldenau Castle are a very popular destination for young and old alike, as its historical charm and idyllic surroundings invite visitors to linger, relax, and explore. Hikers can discover the area around Baldenau Castle on their hike along the LandZeitTour dream loop, which ranked second among the most beautiful circular hiking trails in September 2017.
Its special ambiance makes it a romantic place for weddings and a popular film location. Various scenes for the film Schinderhannes with Curd Jürgens and Maria Schell, as well as several parts of the HEIMAT films by Morbach director Edgar Reitz, were filmed here.
