The castle in Hunolstein dates back to the 12th century and was the seat of the lords of Hunolstein. The ruins are a hilltop castle situated at 395 meters above sea level.
In 1522, the castle was captured by Franz von Sickingen, but during the Thirty Years' War, it was so severely damaged that it had to be abandoned in 1637.
Only a round corner tower and remnants of the surrounding wall have survived.
From the former keep, which stands on a quartzite rock, a square wall remnant about 3 meters high remains, from which there is a beautiful view of the Dhron valley to the west and the Haardtkopf (658 m) near Gornhausen to the north.
Directly at the castle, you will find a parking lot that is already signposted in the village.

The castle is a vivid example of the use of natural conditions for the construction of a fortification. The area was built up with three houses of the lords of the castle, eight houses of the castle garrison (burgmannen) alongside outbuildings such as stables, a barn, and a forge.
