Stahlberg Castle Ruins

A special characteristic of this castle complex in Bacharach-Steeg is represented by the two opposing bergfrieds. The upper and lower castle were each secured by a bergfried, and both towers still define the appearance of the ruin today. The Stahlberg Castle was founded shortly before 1155 by the Archdiocese of Cologne, but came into the possession of the Wittelsbach counts palatine at the latest from 1243. The castles Stahleck and Stahlberg formed the backbone of the southern defense line of the 'Bacharacher Empire'. 
The natural terrain of the ruin and the largely unchanged medieval to early modern structure exert a special fascination on the observer.
