Church of Eckersweiler

According to legend, a nobleman named von Eckstein lived on the height 604 (near the wind turbines). No one knows whether his residence was a house or a castle. He enjoyed great respect among his men. One day, he took in a priest. The priest was a relative of the then royal family of England. The two men became friends. Herr von Eckstein allowed the priest to have accommodation that was to serve as a chapel and to build a protective tower for himself. His men had to help with the construction. He consecrated a nearby well as a pilgrimage well. He named the chapel and the well Lambertus. After some time, the priest had a relative come, who was also his lover. This woman celebrated many festivities. At one such celebration, where games and dice were played, von Eckstein lost most of his possessions to the priest in a drunken stupor. When von Eckstein awoke the next morning, he was a poor man. His cunning wife then asked the new owner for a final harvest on the lost fields, which was granted in writing. In the following time, von Eckstein's men worked diligently to bring the last seed into the fields. Then the priest had to realize that all the land was sown with beech nuts. From this seed, the Herrenwald (Lord's Forest) likely emerged. The beeches in the Herrenwald and also in the district Im Wald still cover an area of about 25 hectares. In the latter half of the 19th century, charcoal burners came to Eckersweiler. They cleared the forest and burned the beeches in mounds to produce charcoal.
