The Citizen Tower, dating back to the early 14th century, once served, in addition to defense, as a debtor's prison on its second floor when a debtor could not pay or provide a secure guarantor. Drunkards, troublemakers, adulterers, and parents whose children skipped school also received a short 'tower sentence'. Until the end of the 17th century, a roundel was located in front of the tower.
