German Gemstone Museum. Objects of the month August

Our objects of the month August are something very special: They are spoons made from various gemstones. Antoine Chervier comes from Crest in France and is 19 years old. He is currently training to be a goldsmith at the Lycée professionnel Amblard in Valence. In October 2025, Antoine spent several months as a guest student at the University of Trier, Campus Idar-Oberstein. There he began to engage in gemstone engraving. He then completed a three-month internship in the workshop of Bernhard Becker, a gemstone engraver in Idar-Oberstein. During this time, he intensively experimented with the shape of spoons and created several “cool spoons.” Antoine describes his intention as follows: “I was looking for a real challenge. My hobby is climbing, and that gave me the idea: Just like conquering a rock face, I wanted to create something in craftsmanship that represents a technical boundary experience for me.” “From this idea came the crazy notion of making a spoon with a handle made of agate in the shape of a functioning carabiner. The challenge of transforming such a hard and brittle stone into a movable, functional object was simply perfect for me.”
