The Egg Market forms the heart of the old town (which is the medieval new town). It is the most beautiful historical ensemble of buildings in the city. For many centuries, the square served as a marketplace. The Egg Market is lined with half-timbered houses from the Baroque period and the Nikolaus Church (13th century). In the center of the square, there is a sculpture of the master butcher Michel Mort, who saved freedom and life in the Battle of Sprendlingen in 1279 against the troops of the Archbishop of Mainz. The sculpture by Stanislaus Cauer from the late 19th century is one of many artworks by the Cauer sculptor family, which can be found in squares and in the museum. In December, a picturesque Advent market takes place here.
