From bunker to museum, how it all came about:
In two former bunkers, visitors to the Energy Landscape Morbach can learn about two exciting topics in contemporary history.
The two bunkers, with their unique atmosphere, create a direct connection between the history of the site and its current use as a park for renewable energies. As the largest ammunition depot of the US Air Force in Europe, the site was once an important building block of the Cold War.
Bunker "Cold War"
The gloomy atmosphere in the bunker "Cold War" transports visitors back to that era. In the darkened bunker, you will discover historical images and sound documents related to the Cold War. In addition, the exhibition showcases the history of the Energy Landscape as an ammunition depot until 1995.
Bunker "Climate Change"
In the bunker "Climate Change," the effects of climate change are presented visually and acoustically. As a visitor, you will learn about the dangers posed by the use of fossil and nuclear energy sources. The formation of fossil energies like coal or oil takes millions of years. Given the energy hunger of our time, this means that sooner or later, the end of fossil energy sources will come. The use of renewable energies does not deplete their sources. In just half an hour, the sun sends as much energy to Earth as humanity consumes in an entire year. This energy is available not only through photovoltaics and solar thermal energy but also indirectly through wind turbines and the use of plants. With the economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable use of wind, sun, and biomass, there is a way out of the energy crisis and climate change.
Energy Landscape Morbach - a unique concept:
The Energy Landscape Morbach not only provides environmentally friendly and CO2-neutral energy. Tourism and information about sustainable energies are also components of the concept.
In the information center, topics related to renewable energies and energy savings are presented in a multimedia format. Year-round, tours are conducted by employees of the municipal administration and certified tour guides.
Since 2002, the Energy Landscape Morbach has seen the construction, operation, and expansion of wind and photovoltaic systems by the company Juwi. In 2006, a biogas plant was connected to the grid, and since 2007, its waste heat has been used to dry wood chips for largely CO2-neutral pellet production. The total output of the Energy Landscape Morbach is around 30.7 MW, with an annual yield of about 50 million kWh of energy.
The facilities for renewable energy generation already produce significantly more electricity than is needed by the 11,000 residents of the independent municipality of Morbach.
Dogs are allowed on a leash in the Energy Landscape.
