Eremitage Reizenborn

Chapel and former hermitage located in the Soonwald near Riesweiler.

The founding of the hermitage is based on a legend that the Virgin Mary appeared at the Reizenborn near Riesweiler and that the water from the spring worked miraculous healings. The establishment of a pilgrimage chapel in 1732 is documented. In the chapel, a venerated image of 'Our Lady of Reizenborn' was displayed. However, as the number of pilgrims steadily increased, a new pilgrimage church had to be built, which was consecrated in 1778. Next to the church stood a small hermitage, which was inhabited by up to two hermits. During the French period, the site was plundered and finally abandoned in 1796.

Almost 200 years later, in 1997, a small ecumenical chapel was built on the foundations of the former hermitage with the help of an inheritance and a lot of volunteer commitment.
