After the great fire in Gemünden around 1460, which likely also destroyed the church, a single-nave church was built on the old foundations between 1440 and 1480. In 1897, the Simultaneum was dissolved and the church inventory was purchased by the evangelical church.
In 1901/02, the tower had to be largely demolished due to structural instability. In 1905/06, the nave and choir square were torn down. Subsequently, a single-nave neo-Gothic nave was created while retaining the late Gothic choir.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, members of the Schmidtburg family were buried in the church, resulting in a series of valuable life-sized grave monuments, of which three are still preserved today. The monument originally erected on the south side for the first Schmidtburger (Fritz Schenk von Schmidtburg) has been located in the private chapel of Gemünden Castle since 1904. During the reconstruction of the evangelical church in 1906, several grave slabs that had previously been in the choir's floor were moved to the outer wall.
