The castle complex was built in the 13th century and served the regional ruling house of the Sponheim family to secure the crossing of the Nahe River and their possessions. From 1331, the castle served as a widow's residence for the self-assured Countess Loretta of Sponheim and likely got its name from her. The women's castle has been extensively restored. During a castle tour, the towers can also be visited. Castle tours are offered.
