German Mineral Museum Idar-Oberstein - Highlights in fascinating abundance One of the smallest cameos in the world, a crystal hall that is unique in Germany, and an impressive collection of replicas of historical diamonds: these are just a few of the highlights that the German Mineral Museum captivates countless visitors from all over the world with year after year. Located in the heart of the Oberstein district, in close proximity to the world-famous Rock Church and the New Castle, the museum run by the association 'Die Heimatfreunde Oberstein e.V.' is one of the most important tourist attractions in the gemstone city on the Nahe River. Housed in a building in the Wilhelminian style, the museum boasts one of the most extensive collections of gemstones and minerals in the region. In 24 rooms across four floors, the exhibits collected over 81 years await visitors, providing insight into the fascinating world of minerals and gemstones as well as the history of Idar-Oberstein. Some of the best artisans have provided the museum with exhibits made of gemstones, such as jewelry, gemstone vessels, and art objects. Visitors to the German Mineral Museum can look forward to a very special journey through time: the exhibition includes 400 million-year-old fossils from the Hunsrück slate of the Devonian period, such as sea lions, sea lilies, and trilobites, as well as a representative selection of jewelry from the 19th and 20th centuries.
