The story revolves again around the blacksmith family Simon from Schabbach, this time in the year 1840. The village of Gehlweiler has been transformed into the 19th century with elaborate sets. Several decorative buildings, including farms, a school, an inn, a church, and a bakehouse, were created around the historic smithy. Today, large picture panels stand in front of the houses where filming took place. The famous Heimat film trilogy was already filmed by Reitz in Gehlweiler. The main filming locations in Gehlweiler were the Simons smithy of the Henninger family and the small film house of the Dämgen family opposite the old stone bridge.
The still completely preserved 'Simons-Smithy' with all the tools from the 19th century is a testament to the craftsmanship in the Hunsrück at that time. The interiors of the small 'HEIMAT Museum' of the Dämgen family, which are still in their original filming condition, provide insights into the living conditions of the Hunsrück villagers and can be visited by appointment with the owner at Tel. 06765 7407.
