Hildegarten at the Historical Museum on the River

Rheinromance, Roman times and Hildegard of Bingen directly on the Rhine. The Museum am Strom brings 2000 years of history on the Rhine to life.

The Hildegarden complements the Hildegard exhibition at the Museum am Strom with plants from the “Physica”. Herbs, shrubs, and trees provide insights into Hildegard's natural science and the transmission of her medical writings.

As a supplement to the Hildegard exhibition at the neighboring Museum am Strom, the garden showcases numerous plants that Hildegard described in her natural science (“Physica”). In this significant collection, the learned Benedictine described nearly 300 herbs, shrubs, and trees with their (healing) effects on humans. Unfortunately, the work is only preserved in late medieval copies, so today no one knows the “original text” of Hildegard of Bingen. The didactically structured Hildegarden presents the “Book of Plants” and the “Book of Trees” from the "Physica" in a total of 15 themed beds and 8 individual beds.

In addition to the Hildegard exhibition at the Museum am Strom, the garden showcases numerous plants from Hildegard of Bingen's natural science (“Physica”). In this collection, the Benedictine described nearly 300 herbs, shrubs, and trees with their (healing) effects on humans. In the small garden, a problem is addressed at the “Fountain of Sources” that many popular writings on “Hildegard medicine” overlook: The “Physica” is only preserved in late medieval copies, which is why no one knows the “original text” of Hildegard.
