Historical City Wall in Simmern

Renovated and partially reconstructed city wall along Römerberg through Mühlengasse.

The renovation and partial reconstruction of the city wall along Römerberg, through Mühlengasse, at the back of the former town hall to Haus Gass is largely completed. Through the purchase and demolition of several houses in Mühlengasse, parts of the medieval city wall, which dates back to the 14th century, have been exposed and renovated.
The city fortifications date back to the 14th century, as Simmern was already referred to as a 'Veste' in 1323. The city wall was completely destroyed during the Orleans War in 1689 and the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703. By 1761, the ring wall seems to have been fully preserved again.
Thanks to extensive renovation and reconstruction measures (2015-2020, which also integrated the area around St. Stephen's Church), it has been possible to make this historical part of the city's history visible and tangible. A part of the wall crown is accessible and offers a beautiful view over Wingertsbergpark and the surrounding area.

At the upper end of the city wall, you will reach the bastion at Römerberg.
