Historical Water Mill Biehl, Asbacherhütte Unlike the loop of the Idar pond, this historical water mill in Achat is a completely atypical water mill. It is actually a former gypsum mill that was converted into a flour mill around 1880. Unlike many historical mills that are primarily used for tourist purposes, the water mill in Asbach is still a genuine production site today. Visitors can still experience traditional grinding techniques.
Ernst Biehl Jr. generates his own electricity with the help of a water wheel. An almost 100-year-old generator that produces 100 volts of direct current is powered by the gear. The gemstones are still worked on very vividly, lying on the traditional tilting chair, allowing the grinder to press the gemstone firmly against the rotating grinding stone as needed. A smoked bacon rind serves as a support for the axis of this stone. Tip: Tech enthusiasts will find an original Edison light bulb here that is still in operation.
Opening hours: from 9 AM to 12 PM and from 1 PM to 5 PM. The last tour takes place at 5 PM. Wednesdays are a rest day. Duration of the tour: approx. 30 minutes.
