House of Encounter - former synagogue
The former synagogue, a stately sandstone building, was constructed from 1864 to 1866 after the model of the Frankfurt main synagogue. The elevation and proportions are perceived as late-classical. It deliberately forms an axis in the urban landscape with the Christian churches as a historical testament to the religious equality of the denominations of the 19th century. Since November 9, 1988, it has been the "House of Encounter" with a permanent exhibition on the history of Jewish life in and around Meisenheim, featuring exhibits on Jewish religion and culture along with a library. Additionally, there is a lecture and concert hall (approx. 80 people) with a colored stained glass window depicting the shared messianic hope motif of Christians and Jews: the return of the 12 tribes to Zion.
