A beautiful relic from the time of High Gothic.
The St. Cuno Chapel by the cemetery in Morscheid-Riedenburg is the remaining choir of a once large church for the surrounding villages (it is said to have offered seating for about 1,500 believers).
The following story is handed down regarding the origin of the currently existing Gothic jewel:
Anno, the powerful Bishop of Cologne, guardian and advisor to the young Emperor Henry IV, managed to secure the bishopric in Trier for his nephew Cuno of Pfufflingen.
However, the clergy and the people of Trier opposed the interference of the Cologne bishop and the emperor.
When Cuno was on his way to Trier to assume his office, he was ambushed and captured on May 18, 1066, near Bitburg by the city bailiff of Trier, Theoderich.
He was taken to Ürzig. According to tradition, on June 1, executioners are said to have thrown him three times from a rock and then struck him down with a sword.
To give Cuno a worthy resting place, Bishop Theoderich of Verdun (a favorite of Anno) had the mortal remains transferred from Ürzig to Lorscheid (Loncscet) and later buried in a grave vault of the monastery church of the Abbey of Tholey. On the way to Lorscheid, the ox cart stopped on the night of July 7 to 8, 1066, at the site of today's Cuno Chapel. A healing miracle is also said to have occurred.
In memory of this event, Bishop Theoderich of Verdun had a small chapel built. In the 14th century, a larger church was likely built under the Trier Bishop Kuno of Falkenstein. The church nave was demolished in the 19th century. Today, only the choir - the St. Cuno Chapel, which is now used as a cemetery chapel - remains.
