The museum in Herrstein is located in close proximity to the former city gate, now the clock tower.
It systematically presents the rich history of the place and its surroundings, from early geological history through the Celtic and Roman periods to the Middle Ages and the present day, with very interesting exhibits and information panels. Of particular interest from the geological history are the slate fossils and minerals from the region, which formed the basis of the gemstone industry in the area. The life and buildings of the Celts from the center of their settlement area are presented, as well as numerous archaeological finds from the Roman period.
The place, founded between 1100 and 1200 AD as a secondary residence of the Counts of Sponheim, was granted city rights in 1428 AD and was the seat of a high court. From this epoch, and specifically from medieval justice, visitors will find many exhibits and explanations.
Further sections are dedicated to the horrors of the Thirty Years' War and the later affiliation with the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. Of particular interest are the representations of historical trades such as tanners, weavers, turners, agate grinders, and mechanics. Visitors will find a fully preserved bicycle that a local mechanic constructed in 1868, as well as the display of the electricity plant founded in Herrstein in 1903. Another section covers the mining that was once abundant in the region and the copper and iron smelting.
