The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. It was established in 1980 and encompasses landscape and nature conservation areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The protected area extends from the heights of the Hunsrück over the high plateaus of the Mosel-Saar region to the rolling Saar-Nahe hills. The natural and cultural landscape is diverse, featuring extensive forest areas, species-rich meadows, hedges, and ditches in open fields, river and stream valleys, characteristic rocks, and moors.
The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park is characterized by impressive biodiversity. A rich flora and fauna have found their habitat here. Hikers and nature lovers can discover rare plant and animal species, including those that are hardly found in other parts of Germany. The open meadow landscapes serve as retreats for butterflies and insects, while the wooded areas provide habitats for wildlife such as deer, wild boars, and foxes.
There are numerous opportunities for leisure activities in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. In addition to hiking, one can go cycling, horseback riding, or engage in water sports.
To make all of this accessible, the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park offers guided hikes, workshops, seminars, courses, and lectures on various topics throughout the year. Nature experience programs are also available for kindergarten groups, school classes, and youth groups. Expeditions into the soil or bat safaris are part of the program, as well as animal-themed forest rallies or climate-conscious nutrition.
Several information centers distributed throughout the protected area provide visitors with comprehensive insights into the nature park. The nature park can be explored multimedia-wise in the experience museum "Human and Landscape" at the nature park information center in Hermeskeil. The museum is particularly interesting for children. A large panoramic map with a screen provides information about the sights and recreational facilities along the Saar, Mosel, Nahe, Ruwer, and in the Hunsrück. The adjacent park with a tactile path and an outdoor classroom invites visitors to linger.
Inspiring enthusiasm for nature and the environment, bringing it closer to children, adolescents, and adults in an experiential and playful way, and thus laying the foundation for environmentally conscious action is a concern of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park.
