Built in 1948, this was the location of the Bingen pilots until the expansion of the Middle Rhine took place in 1974. The pilot house served as an order station and a place for the Bingen pilot cooperative to stay. It was constantly occupied during the day. Orders from shipping companies, mail, and telegrams were delivered to passing ships by boat before the era of modern communication.

Today, the Bingen Schifferverein 1895 e.V. operates the house as a pilot museum.

There is no admission fee and the museum is barrier-free !!

In seven explanation zones, information is provided on the topics of Binger Loch, warning signals, accidents, pilot everyday life, water police, towing shipping, and passenger shipping.

On the available 15 m² of floor space, large-format panels with up to twelve photos each are displayed, which are contextually related to each other.

Additional ceiling-mounted screens show attractive short films from the world of inland shipping, silent in a continuous loop. On shelves under the picture panels, rare and somewhat unusual devices from the world of shipping, which hardly anyone knows today, let alone knows what they were used for, are presented. During opening hours, there is always an “active” (former shipper) on site as an explainer. These “old sailors” always have something interesting to tell from the world of their work.
