In autumn 2018, the cultural center "Golden Angel" was opened. It includes the Regional Museum Baumholder, the city library, and the tourist information VG Baumholder. The Regional Museum presents the history of the region, the establishment of the Baumholder military training area, and the more than 60 years of the US presence in Baumholder and its impact on the city and the surrounding communities.
Embedded in the history of Baumholder, starting with prehistory, the period from the arrival of the US military to the present with many formative influences on the city and its population is primarily presented in the attic of the Golden Angel. The building of the Golden Angel was closely linked to this development as a hotel, bar, and variety theater. When the US Army established a garrison at the already existing Baumholder military training area in 1951, the temporarily over 20,000 American soldiers with their families brought the “American Way of Life” to the small town shaped by agriculture and the surrounding communities.
The changes that the many soldiers brought with their foreign way of life and which had a significant influence on the development of the region and also on the thinking of the German population are primarily presented and made tangible.
In the Baumholder region, what happened on a small scale and in fast motion is what could later be observed throughout Germany and Europe: the Americanization of daily life. This interesting and also wild time for the city in the 50s and 60s is illustrated with various means (texts, images, everyday objects, music, press articles, films, etc.) and is the focal theme of the exhibition in the attic of the cultural center "Golden Angel".
