Roman Monument - Rock Grave Monument - Schweinschied

The Roman grave monument near Schweinschied was created during the late Claudian to early Neronian period (1st to 2nd century AD). The deceased for whom this cenotaph was erected may have been a former member of the Mainz Legion XXII. It is likely that the settlement site was located opposite the monument on a small hill. In the early 20th century, a four-god stone (Apollo, Juno, Hercules, and Minerva) was found a few hundred meters away (now in the Worms City Museum). During ground works in 1928, cremation graves were uncovered about 800 meters from here in a southwestern direction on a ridge. Not far from the monument, a Roman aqueduct was discovered and excavated a few years ago.
