Rotenfels near Traisen

The Rotenfels, at 202 meters high, is the highest sheer cliff in Central Europe north of the Alps. The significance of this nature reserve, which extends far beyond the district, lies in its scenic aesthetics as well as its geological, botanical, and zoological features, which are unique. Among the plants, the violet-flowering, strictly protected pasque flower and the yellow mountain stonecrop are particularly noteworthy. Among the trees, the rock maple is notable, easily recognized by its three-lobed leaf. The extremely rare peregrine falcons have chosen the inaccessible rocky areas as a refuge. Especially the rock plateau of the Bastei offers a breathtaking backdrop with wide views.
