From the hiking parking lot at the sawmill in Simmertal, one can reach Dhaun Castle via the former Dhaun outworks Rotenberg and Brunkenstein in the shortest way. To the left of the Kellenbach stream, paths and trails lead along former mills into the rugged landscape of the 'Rock Garden' with beautiful viewpoints and resting places. The houses Brunkenstein and Rotenburg were built as military-strategic outworks between the village of Siemere (now: Simmertal) and Dhaun Castle (now: Schloss Dhaun). While a clearly visible wall remnant of Brunkenstein is still preserved, the location of Rotenburg can only be speculated, namely on a rocky spur about 400 m below the Ruine Brunkenstein.
