Schillerstein in Kirn

The Schillerstein was erected in 1905 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of the prominent German poet Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805). The original location was on the right bank of the Nahe River near the Schiller Bridge. In this area, the riverbed was expanded on the southern side in 1926 as part of the Nahe regulation. The Schillerstein had to be moved to its current location, a former quarry terrace.

The current location and its surroundings, 'Klingelrech', were used as a popular local recreation area by the residents of Kirn until the construction of the B 41 in the late 1950s. The Kirn Beautification Association, led by its chairman, Justice Secretary Schwager, took care of the maintenance and design of the site. Several shelters and an extensive network of hiking trails were popular facilities used for relaxation and leisure.
