The tower is the landmark of Simmern and is named after the famous German robber captain Johannes Bückler, known as "Schinderhannes." In February 1799, he was imprisoned in the former powder tower. From there, he managed to escape in August 1799 from the tower, which had been considered escape-proof until then. As one of the few buildings in the city, the tower survived the destruction in 1689.
Today, the tower, with its medieval ambiance, serves as an exhibition and conference room.
On the upper floor, the exhibition "Schinderhannes - Myth and Reality" from the Hunsrück Museum is displayed. This can only be visited during the opening hours of the entire Schinderhannes Tower or upon request as part of a guided tour.
