Since the 14th century, the majestic estate, which was once built by the Counts of Sponheim, has been perched over the idyllic village of Hunsrück.
Over time, the former castle complex was transformed into the present-day Schloss Gemünden, which is a true eye-catcher.
Schloss Gemünden is still inhabited today by its owners, Baron Anton von Salis Soglio and his family.
The first castle on the rock above Gemünden dates back to the lineage of the Counts of Sponheim. They built the residential tower around 1350, of which only the basement level remains today. In 1514, Fritz von Schmidtburg acquired the castle Gemünden from the Count Palatine of Simmern and expanded it. For more than 300 years, it remained in the possession of the Schmidtburg family. During the Palatine succession war (1689), the castle was largely destroyed by explosions and fires. It took more than a quarter of a century to rebuild the present castle (1716-1728) on the foundations of the old castle complex, featuring four massive round towers in the early Baroque style.
Through the marriage of the last Schmidtburg heiress to the Austrian captain Anton Baron von Salis Soglio from Graubünden in 1810, the ownership passed to the current owners. Due to private ownership, guided tours are not possible!
Today, selected areas of Schloss Gemünden can be booked for events or private celebrations.
