Schmidtburg Castle
The Schmidtburg is one of the oldest and most significant castle complexes in the Hunsrück region. Its origins date back to the year 926, when three Frankish nobles exchanged land with the St. Maximin Monastery in Trier to build a castle for protection against the Hungarians, who were threatening our region at that time.
Much suggests that this castle is indeed the Schmidtburg; however, it is assumed that this medieval structure was intended merely as a refuge and bore little resemblance to the castle complex that has survived as a ruin. Initial clearing work by scouts in the late 1960s, followed by the first efforts of the municipality of Schneppenbach from 1972 to 1975, and larger excavation and preservation efforts as part of job creation measures in the 1980s ensured that the castle complex became accessible again. As a result, this significant architectural monument has been preserved for the residents of the Kirner Land as a monument of their local history and can encourage them to engage with their own history.
The castle complex is freely accessible to all. Unfortunately, the Schmidtburg is not accessible for people with mobility impairments. The access paths are also not passable with aids.
