In 1318, the church was elevated to a collegiate church and placed under the authority of the Archbishop of Mainz. In the 15th century, the tower was added with two late Gothic bells, and in the 16th century, the choir was created, followed by the pulpit in the 17th century.
The church owes its fame to the abundance of tomb monuments of the Dhaun wild and Rhine counts. These mostly lavishly and elaborately designed tomb monuments allow for the tracing of the development of sculpture over four centuries up to the mid-18th century.
Another treasure is the “Stumm organ,” built in 1782 by Friedrich Carl Stumm. Over six generations, the 'Stumms' from the Hunsrück village of Sulzbach near Rhaunen built around 400 organs over the course of 190 years, most of which are still played today.
