Silent witness from the Middle Ages
The Stumpfer Turm stands today as a silent witness on the narrow ridge between Hinzerath and Wederath, directly on the Hunsrück Heights Road (intersection B 50/B327) and in close proximity to the archaeological park "Belginum". It likely served as a watch and signal tower for the castle Baldenau located in the valley to the southwest, within sight.
The construction style and materials suggest that this tower and the castle were built around the same time (14th century). The round tower, built from Hunsrück slate, has a diameter of 6 m and is approximately 10 m high.
Due to its exposed location, one could look far over the landscape from here. Since the castle Baldenau was a border castle of the Electorate of Trier, the watch and signal tower had an important function.
To this day, there is no confirmation of a tunnel connection between the signal tower and the castle. If there was a tunnel, it would not have reached the castle. Building a tunnel under the castle's moat was not possible at that time.
