Between Boppard, Trier and Perl, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail offers approximately 415 km in total length over 27 stages through a magnificent low mountain range, providing sheer variety with countless impressions and opportunities. Here, nature lovers discover everything that makes the heart race: expansive forests, lush meadows, idyllic streams, impressive ridges, steep vineyards, historical monuments, and diverse paths with breathtaking panoramas.
The Saar-Hunsrück Trail has received the highest award, the "German Hiking Seal" as a premium trail, which a hiking path can achieve across Europe. As the only long-distance hiking trail, it runs more than 70% on natural paths, with the asphalt proportion being below 4%, which is unique in Europe.
Due to the constant change of valleys and heights, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail also offers a challenging mix with its elevation profile, where the clever route design incorporates many small details along the way, so that hikers are continually surprised by new impressions. At Keller Steg, the hiker must decide which direction to continue, as the routes from Idar-Oberstein, Trier, and from Perl through Saarland converge here.
The Saar-Hunsrück Trail was voted Germany's most beautiful long-distance hiking trail in 2017 in a nationwide public vote organized by the magazine “Wandermagazin”, in which nearly 28,000 hikers participated. It is thus the first German long-distance hiking trail to receive this prestigious award for the second time. It was already the winner of this competition in 2009.
